MEL Aviation Ltd history

April 2008

The MEL Group acquired Northwest Aerodynamic Models Ltd. of New Mills, Derbyshire. The acquisition brings expertise to the group in Wind Tunnel Models, Simulators and Simulator Domes, carbon fibre component manufacture and general design and precision engineering.

 

November 2007
The MEL Group acquired Arrowsmith Engineering and Consultants of Alton, Hampshire.

Arrowsmith is a supplier of precision components and test equipment to the aerospace industry.

 

June 2007
MEL group acquired HSL (Headset Services Ltd) manufacturers and overhaulers of specialist communication equipment including headsets, helmets and associated equipment.

 

February 2007
MEL Aviation group acquired RDD (Reliant Design Development Co Ltd) manufacturers of specialist test equipment in hydraulics, generators, fuel, electronics, electrical actuation and radar cooling.

 

December 2006
MEL Aviation Group acquired Trent Aero Engineering Ltd, manufacturers of precision fabrications made from aluminium, stainless steel, titanium and other exotic materials.

 

June 2006

  • Laurence Walter Ltd is formed to act as a vehicle for MEL Aviation's expansion globally through joint ventures.
  • LWD is registered in Serbia, and a purpose built 50,000 sqft facility is under construction.
  • LWVN is registered and a 25,000 sqft facility is acquired for the repair/overhaul of aerospace products.

April 2003
MEL Aviation Ltd moved into a new purpose-built 45000 sq ft premises.

 

2002
MEL Aviation Ltd expands its manufacturing facility with the purchase of precision engineers David Bramley Engineering Ltd (DBE) of Nottingham, UK.

 

1994
The name of the company was changed to MEL Aviation Ltd. This reflected the diversification of the company's activities and scope within the aerospace industry. This includes:

  • Aircraft component repair and overhaul
  • Ground Support Equipment
  • Military Aircrew Equipment

Also in 1994, MEL Aviation Ltd expanded into Europe. Based in Hamburg, Germany, this provided the company with an excellent foothold within Europe.

 

1973
The company moved from Harlow, where it was originally founded, to Sudbury in Suffolk.

 

1971
The name of the company changed to MEL (Aviation Oxygen) Limited. This was to reflect on the main area of business for the company.

 

1968
The company started out as Melbreak Engineering Limited located in a single unit at Hatfield Heath, just outside Harlow. Initially the company specialised in the repair and overhaul of military oxygen and cryogenic equipment.
