Approved Passenger Service Unit Packaging

Since 1997 new requirements for the carriage of Chemical Oxygen Generators were introduced into the International Civil Aviation Authority Technical Instructions for the safe transport of dangerous goods by air.
They were introduced following the ValuJet air disaster, flight 592 on Monday 11th May 1996.

The ValuJet disaster was caused when one or more Oxygen Generators triggered during the flight. This caused a fire in the cargo hold, leading to the deaths of 110 people.

MEL Aviation Ltd is the only supplier in Europe to produce packaging for the safe transportation of Passenger Service Units (PSU) and Personal Breathing Equipment (PBE).

PBE - The packaging was designed to meet all UN regulations and then independently tested by PIRA (Packaging Industries Research Association). The packaging was required to prevent unintentional actuation, and the surface temperature of the box (when the generator is fired) had to fall within safe parameters.

PSUs have been classified into five categories from A to E, a list of part numbers is available from us to ensure the supply of the correct packaging and internal furniture.

Extra, and more specific, training is available on request, although each purchase will have an instruction and drawing pack included. This ensures that we can work closely together to ensure total compliance with the regulations, to transport these potentially dangerous goods.

For verification of our certification for this packaging, please contact P.I.R.A. International on 01372 802000 Dangerous Goods Section.
